On 15 and 16 June, the Leaders Summit 2020 promoted by the UN Global Compact will be held in New York at the United Nations headquarters and the Jacob Javits Center. On the occasion, the 20th anniversary of the Global Compact will also be celebrated.
The ceremony will be held in the iconic UN General Assembly Hall.
It was on January 31, 1999, when former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan launched the Global Compact at the World Economic Forum in Davos, inviting all actors of sustainable development to join the newborn movement.
“Specifically, I call on you - individually through your firms, and collectively through your business associations -
to embrace, support and enact a set of core values in the areas of human rights,
labour standards, and environmental practices”.
(Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General,
World Economic Forum, 31 January 1999, Davos)
Since then, more than 18,000 companies from 161 countries have participated in the Global Compact, producing more than 66,000 sustainability reporting documents (human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption). Alongside the business component, according to a multi-stakeholder logic, there have been more than 3,000 non-profit organizations.
For the 2020 Summit, more than 1,500 business leaders active worldwide and oriented to the principles of the United Nations Agenda 2030 are expected to participate. Together with them, there will be representatives of national governments, investors, non-profit organizations and civil society, young innovators. The two days will be divided into in-depth sessions, keynote speeches, round tables: distinguished speakers will share special sensitivities, visionary projects, results obtained in terms of progress of the 17 Global Goals.
