Dear Participants of the UN Global Compact,

With 2023 underway, there’s no doubt we live in a fragile, fractured world. The war in Ukraine, energy and food crises, climate change, extreme weather, threats to democracy, the ongoing pandemic and many other headwinds like inflation, currency fluctuation and looming recession undermine our efforts for a sustainable world.

These are global challenges we must rally behind addressing. Let’s make sure that 2023 is a year that turns the tide back to progress. Solutions are always near. We have a number of important opportunities in front of us that can contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive world.

With the world facing extraordinary crises, the UN Global Compact and its 62 Local Networks are supporting companies to take measurable, accountable actions for a sustainable world. It’s the right thing to do and good for business.

Il 29 giugno 2022, Sanda Ojiambo - Assistant Secretary-General e CEO del Global Compact delle Nazioni Unite, ha incontrato i Membri del Consiglio Direttivo dell’UN Global Compact Network Italia. Il meeting, tenutosi presso il Circolo degli Esteri a Roma, è stata una straordinaria opportunità di confronto e scambio su risultati, sfide e scenari futuri nella Decade of Action per lo sviluppo sostenibile. Il Network italiano ha inoltre colto l’occasione per presentare i risultati raggiunti negli ultimi anni, che evidenziano un forte aumento del numero di imprese che sostengono e applicano i Dieci Principi dello UN Global Compact e si impegnano su temi critici come l’azione per il Clima e la parità di Genere.

Il Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite António Guterres ha di recente nominato la kenyota Sanda Ojiambonuovo Direttore Esecutivo del Global Compact delle Nazioni Unite. Come seconda donna ad essere nominata nel ruolo, Ojiambo succederà il 17 giugno 2020 a Lise Kingo, alla quale il Segretario Generale è profondamente grato per la dedizione e leadership strategica dimostrate nella funzione di guida del Global Compact e di avanzamento degli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile.

Ojiambo, dal 2010 ha ricoperto il ruolo di Sustainable Business and Social Impact Manager per Safaricom Plc, Kenya. È stata anche dal 2008 al 2010 Senior Manager di Safaricom e delle MPESA Foundation, Kenya, periodo durante il quale ha guidato l'implementazione di diverse iniziative di partenariato pubblico-privato tra Safaricom e le organizzazioni delle Nazioni Unite. Nel corso della sua carriera, ha coltivato e gestito relazioni con aziende leader ed organizzazioni della società civile. In questo impegno, è incluso il suo lavoro di capacity building in Somalia insieme a UNDP e CARE International. Ojiambo ha conseguito un Master of Arts in Public Policy presso la University of Minnesota, USA, e un Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Development presso la McGill University, Canada.

Cari partecipanti al Global Compact delle Nazioni Unite,
siamo da poco entrati nel 2023 e viviamo in un mondo fragile e profondamente diviso. La guerra in Ucraina, la crisi energetica ed alimentare, il cambiamento climatico, i fenomeni meteorologici estremi, le minacce alla democrazia, la pandemia e numerosi altri eventi avversi come l’inflazione, le oscillazioni monetarie e la recessione incombente, minano i nostri sforzi per un mondo sostenibile. Sono sfide globali che dobbiamo affrontare insieme: facciamo sì che nel 2023 si punti nuovamente al progresso. Abbiamo a disposizione diverse soluzioni ed una serie di importanti opportunità che possono contribuire alla creazione di un mondo più sostenibile e inclusivo.

Cari Partecipanti al Global Compact delle Nazioni Unite,
in un momento come quello attuale in cui stiamo assistendo all’esacerbarsi di grandi sfide globali - tra cui, cambiamenti climatici, conflitti armati, aumento delle disuguaglianze, mutazioni socio-economiche e geopolitiche -, la convergenza di megatrend sociali, tecnologici, politici ed economici sta producendo complessità, incertezze e sconvolgimenti senza precedenti.

Di fronte a questa situazione, siamo chiamati a prendere scelte e cogliere opportunità sempre più importanti e decisive. Ed è evidente come sia le nostre azioni, che le possibili non azioni, generino grandi impatti e conseguenze.

Negli ultimi anni, ho constatato che i leader aziendali sono sempre più consapevoli del potenziale che il settore privato può mettere in campo per affrontare e risolvere i problemi globali, facendosi così promotore di una trasformazione profonda. Gli stessi leader hanno potuto condividere soluzioni trasversali e progressi raggiunti in diversi ambiti, tra cui l’azione per il clima, le energie rinnovabili e il salario dignitoso, in occasione dei numerosi incontri globali, regionali e locali organizzati dal Global Compact delle Nazioni Unite.

On 22 of May 2020, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Sanda Ojiambo of Kenya as Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact. As the second woman to be appointed in the role, she will succeed Lise Kingo of Denmark to whom the Secretary‑General is deeply grateful for her dedication and strategic leadership in steering the work of the Global Compact and broadening its contribution to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ms. Ojiambo, who assumes the role on 17 June 2020, will bring 20 years of experience to lead the UN Global Compact in its next phase to mobilize a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders and bring the full weight of the private sector to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She has served as Head of Sustainable Business and Social Impact, Safaricom Plc, Kenya since 2010. Ms. Ojiambo was also the Senior Manager of Safaricom and MPESA Foundations, Kenya from 2008 to 2010, during which she led the implementation of several public-private partnership initiatives between Safaricom and UN organizations. Throughout her career, she has cultivated and managed relationships with key business entities and civil society organizations, including her capacity development work in Somalia with UNDP and CARE International. Ms. Ojiambo holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota, USA, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Development from McGill University, Canada.

The UN Global Compact stands with the United Nations and world leaders in expressing our deep concern about the ongoing war in Ukraine and unequivocal demand for peace. This unlawful and unprovoked attack by Russia serves as a timely and tragic reminder that we need to reject conflict anywhere as an affront to peace everywhere.

The member states of the United Nations have responded to this war quickly and almost unanimously, deploring “in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.” The message is loud and clear: End hostilities in Ukraine — now. Silence the guns — now. Open the door to dialogue and diplomacy — now.

On 29 June 2022, Sanda Ojiambo - Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the UN Global Compact, met with the Board of Directors of the UN Global Compact Network Italy. The meeting, held at the Circolo degli Esteri in Rome, was an extraordinary opportunity for discussion and exchange on achievements, challenges and future scenarios in the Decade of Action for Sustainable Development. The Italian Network presented also its trends over the last few years, showing a tremendous increase in the number of companies that support and apply the Ten Principles of the Global Compact and are engaged on critical issues such as Climate Action and Gender Equality.
